Preventative Veterinary Care

Baltimore, MD veterinarian Boston Street Animal Hospital provides complete veterinary care for dogs, cats, and pocket pets (hamsters, guinea pigs, ferrets, and rodents). From wellness exams and vaccinations to advanced surgical and diagnostic care and acupuncture and other holistic treatments, your pet receives only the best veterinary medical care at Boston Street Animal Hospital.

Wellness Exams

Wellness ServicesRegular examinations keep your pet healthy. The Boston Street Animal Hospital medical team recommends that all pets undergo a complete wellness exam at least once a year. However, the more frequently your pet sees us for exams, the better - routine exams help us identify and treat diseases quickly.

Most importantly, a complete "nose-to-tail" examination allows us to develop a comprehensive health profile for your pet. This information aids us in future treatment of your pet and helps us identify medical problems at an early stage, before they develop into serious conditions that are difficult and expensive to treat.

We believe that your pet is healthier when you know more about his or her health care plan. Exams are a great time to share information with you about your pet's health. We may ask you questions about your pet's diet and lifestyle and we encourage you to ask any questions you may have about your pet's health. During an exam, we discuss vaccinations, nutrition, behavior and other topics that are important for maintaining the health and well-being of your pet.

City Pet Health Care

Pets living in the city have special health care needs. Prevention is the key to keeping city pets healthy. At Boston Street Animal Hospital, we emphasize preventive care and education for all city-dwelling pets and their people. Vaccines are the cornerstone of your pet's preventive health care plan. Thanks to advances in veterinary medicine, many common diseases once fatal to pets can now be prevented through the use of vaccinations.

At Boston Street Animal Hospital, we vaccinate your pet based on his or her unique individual needs and lifestyle. However, we recommend all pets receive vaccinations against leptospirosis, parvovirus, and distemper, due to the large population of dogs in the city. We also offer one or three-years rabies vaccinations.

Keeping your pet free of parasites (fleas, ticks, hookworms, etc.) is essential to his or her health. Parasites can also affect you and your family, as well. Parasites such as roundworms and hookworms are zoonotic, which means they can be transferred to humans. Boston Street Animal Hospital's parasite prevention program protects your pet against heartworm infection, intenstinal parasites, and other common pet parasites.

Senior Pet Care

As your pet ages, his or her veterinary medical care needs change. Most pets are considered "seniors" between the ages of four and seven. Wellness examinations, blood work, and dietary counseling all are important steps you can take toward keeping your senior pet healthy and happy. Boston Street Animal Hospital strives to provide complete care for all older cats and dogs. Our senior wellness exams, laboratory tests, dietary counseling program, and holistic treatment options are specially-designed for your older pet's good health.

Holistic/Alternative Care

Holistic medicine benefits your pet in many ways. Holistic medical techniques are natural and help the body heal itself. Dr. Greg Burbelo has practiced alternative holistic medicine for many years. Your pet receives a wide range of veterinary holistic services at our hospital, including acupuncture and whole-food-based treatments.

A natural, healthy diet benefits your pet in many ways. We emphasize whole-food, grain-free diets for pets. We work with Dogma For Pets, a local holistic pet food retailer, to provide healthy diets and nutritional alternatives for pets. Boston Street Animal Hospital also is proud to offer veterinary acupuncture services for your pet. We work with a local veterinary acupuncturist who can treat your pet either at the hospital or in the comfort of your own home.

Exotic Pet Care

Whether your furry friend is large or small, he or she receives the best veterinary care available at Boston Street Animal Hospital. Dr. Greg Burbelo and our staff provide complete veterinary care to a variety of pocket pet species, including ferrets, hamsters, guinea pigs, and rodents. These pets have health care needs that are far different from dogs and cats, and our hospital is specially equipped to treat your exotic pet.

Pet Identification and Microchipping

Pet MicrochippingIn a large city, pet identification is a must. A sturdy collar and identification tag are a great way to identify your pet and keep him or her safe, but sometimes, these items are not enough. Microchipping your pet is a safe, easy way to identify your pet and help ensure he or she returns home safely. About the size and shape of a grain of rice, a microchip is implanted under your pet's skin in a procedure similar to a vaccination. Information about your pet is encoded into the microchip and veterinary hospitals and animal shelters across the country are equipped with scanners capable of detecting and reading microchips. If your pet is lost, his or her microchip is scanned and the information is used to reunite you and your pet.

Boston Street Animal Hospital uses the HomeAgain microchip system. Please ask a staff member for more information about microchipping your pet.
