Happy Spring! A Review Of Parasite Prevention Options

Happy Spring!  At last!

Friday marked the Spring Equinox and that means it’s time to start thinking about flea and tick season!

BRAVECTO

What: An oral pill that prevents and kills fleas and ticks, including the tick that causes Lyme Disease.

Lasts: 3 months

For: Dogs only.  Bravecto is dosed by the weight of your dog. This is a great option for dogs that don’t tolerate topical flea and tick medications well, or for those with thick hair or closely clipped coats that make topical application difficult.

PROGRAM INJECTABLE

What: An injectable medication that prevents flea reproduction

Lasts: 6 months

For: Cats only.  Program Injectable is a great option for strictly indoor cats, to prevent infestations within the home.

Given by: a veterinarian or technican, in the office

ACTIVYL

What: A topical medication that kills and prevents fleas and ticks

Lasts: 1 month per application

For: Dogs only (this product is available for cats, but we do not carry it.)

Given by: applied by the owner, at home

REVOLUTION

What: A topical medication that kills and prevents fleas, ticks and mosquitos

Lasts: 1 month per application

For: Cats and dogs

Given by: applied by the owner, at home

COMFORTIS

What: A chewable oral tablet that kills and prevents fleas

Lasts: 1 month

For: Cats and dogs.  Comfortis is a great option for indoor cats that share a home with dogs, or for pets that do not tolerate topical flea products.  Comfortis starts killing fleas within 30 minutes of ingestion, making it a good treatment for pets with active infestations.
